I absolutely love the cartridge. The only other real miss here is that the barrel isn’t threaded. An interrupter lug—or “Chicklet”—on the bolt’s top (arrow) locks into a recess in the A17’s receiver. Concurrent to the rifle’s launch, CCI introduced A17 ammunition, which delivers 100 f.p.s. While the A17 has modern looks, it is not an aesthetic abomination. For a $300 plinker or small-game getter, Savage’s A17 in.17 HM2 is a fantastic little rifle. This has the Boyds Pro Varmint stock which is a hardwood stock. If you need longer range than what .22LR can do, bulk .223/5.56 ammo isn’t that much more than .17 HMR, and will give longer range, less wind drift, and more terminal energy. Devoid of iron sights, the A17’s comb is optimized for scope use, and its butt is topped by a very generous, soft recoil pad. Been back to the dealer 2 times now and its going back cause now it wont do anything But, I can’t choose which one I want, nor can I ‘build’ one for under $200.00- the way I want it at least. In Johnson Model of 1941 rifle fashion, the stock flairs out around the 10-round-capacity magazine then tapers rearward of it. It is a beautiful rifle and one of my favorite rifles now. I guess Savage knows what their doing! That patent-pending delayed blowback action is certainly the reason for the rifle’s perfect reliability. Thursday, September 17, 2015. This momentary hesitation keeps the gun closed just long enough for pressures to drop. Savage's semi-automatic A Series has proven itself for reliability and accuracy. Thanks to then-new high-energy propellant and a modern, jacketed bullet with a good ballistic coefficient (not a misshapen hunk of lead from a previous century), the new cartridge was the first 200-yd. I bought one about a year ago, and I have really enjoyed shooting it at the range. Conversely, if a cartridge does not work in a particular gun, the ammunition manufacturer points its finger at the gunmaker. Well done, but I’m still on the fence between the two…. And it’s inexpensive to produce in quantity—sometimes mere pennies a round—. The A17 is an inexpensive target/varmint rifle. Two other possibilities for .17 HMR irregularities were bore obstructions (likely from squib loads causing a jacketed bullet to stick in the barrel) or case failures at the rim—rare but possible. The same way Kel-Tec made the .22 WMR work with its delayed-blowback/recoil-operated hybrid PMR-30 (November 2011, p. 80) and its CMR-30 carbine—through its own brand of delayed-blowback operation. The A17 features Savage’s incredible AccuTrigger. Incredibly simple, incredibly functional. like bond’s db5. Unless you know of a ultra cheap .223/5.56 load that will shoot 1 MOA or better I’ll go with .17 HMR. Savage’s B17 FV is a robust and accurate if somewhat homely bolt-action repeater chambered for the zippy.17 HMR cartridge. Not only did the rifle have to work, it had to be affordable. .17 HMR loads. Although the bolt does not stay open after the last round is fired, the A17 has a manual hold open located behind the trigger guard (l.). Savage A17 rail (image courtesy JWT for thetruthaboutguns.com). It’s so good, in fact, that I’m personally struggling between a .17 WSM and a .17 HMR. Looking at Savage’s A17 page I can see a few different Boyd’s stocks being offered in factory configs. Retail price was $380-something, clearance priced at $188. The second school of thought: build an affordable good-shooting rifle that needs no work. At the range, the recoil of the A17 can likely be measured with scientific instruments, but it’s pretty hard to feel it. SG Ammo has new brass Fiocchi 55g FMJ BT for $264/1000, and there were tons of Black Friday deals where you could get quality brass-cased ammo for well under $275/1000 (with mail-in rebates, I saw some for as little as $235/1000). It fits me well with low rings, but most will probably like medium height rings, depending on your objective. I’ve heard about all of the misfeeds/misfires & thought the issues were addressed. I don’t buy any gun without also buying a thousand rounds of ammo, optics and usually a few other things so I probably saved myself at least $5-600 maybe another couple hundred bucks to get the barrel threaded (don’t know what process that costs – I’ve only bought guns with threaded barrels for the last few years). The Savage A17 is an affordable gun at about $450. Almost as brilliant as Savage’s Accutrigger and deserving of great praise. I had no issues of any kind throughout the review. That’s why the introduction of the Savage A17 rifle (and accompanying CCI A17 ammunition, which is actually about 100 feet per second faster than other .17 HMR loads) is such a big deal—Savage has succeeded where others failed or simply walked away.
